The shredding of iron drums and IBC containers in Hungarian territory
Hungary is certainly not just the land of Pálinka, the Hungarian national beverage, but offers much more. It joined Europe in May 2004 and although its economy relies primarily on agriculture and livestock farming, it is also an industrial country, especially in the Budapest area.
It is therefore obvious that, as with many industrial economies, the issue of waste treatment arises, and in Hungary there is no shortage of organizations with strong potential in terms of ecology and recovery, capable of generating business from material reduction and recycling.
This is the case for our client, who faced the problem of shredding iron drums and IBC containers and contacted us through our local partner.
The Proposed Solution
To shred this type of material and ensure production in line with the client’s requirements, we offered a 220 HP 2-shaft shredder from the 2R series with a 1.5 m grinding chamber.
The shredder is equipped with 75 mm thick single-hook blades. A robust support frame, accessible via vertical ladders, and a hopper equipped with an arc-shaped hydraulic ram complete the supply.
The ram is not included by chance. The shredding of iron drums and IBC containers is always problematic: cylindrical drums can position themselves longitudinally and tend to rotate on the blades, while IBCs risk resting between the blades and the side of the hopper, resulting in the blades creating a seat in the IBC body without being able to grind it.
The advantage of the ram, integrated into an automatic cycle managed by a Siemens PLC, is to act on the material by partially deforming it, but above all to ensure that the pushing pressure helps the blades grip, thus guaranteeing adequate shredder productivity.
Installation and Testing
In this specific case, the client handled the installation independently, while for start-up and testing, one of our Service technicians traveled on-site for the appropriate pre-start safety checks and operational testing with the client’s material.
From our headquarters, we monitored the initial start-up via remote assistance, a feature with which each of our products is equipped when the electrical panel has a PLC. This allowed us to refine the program and install updates remotely with ease, in collaboration with the field technicians.
The presence of the PLC also allows clients who request it to complete the supply with a web panel that collects the main machine parameters and alerts for easy consultation by the client from desktop or smartphone.
