A plastic bottle (PET) shredder
“PET is inherently a 100% recyclable material; not surprisingly, the European SUP directive has not banned PET bottles” is one of the concepts expressed in an interesting article from last fall in Il Sole 24 Ore: Mineral Waters, Development Hinges on PET and Ecodesign.
The SUP (Single Use Plastics) directive is EU Directive 2019/904 of June 5, 2019, the regulation that prohibits or limits the sale of single-use plastic items and specifically concerns single-use plastic products that most pollute European beaches and seas and fishing gear containing plastic.
It is in this context that one of the leading players in the mineral water market approached us for a PET plastic bottle shredder: production waste, returns and production surpluses, etc.
The product, a 15 HP electric twin-shaft shredder from the F series, equipped with a mix of 1-hook and 4-hook blades with 50 mm thickness, became part of the group’s Tuscan facility.

The shredder, with a grinding chamber of 578×620 mm, is equipped with baffles fitted with additional seals to protect the front and rear bearings from the action of the liquid contained in the bottles.
The machine, equipped with an electrical panel with IP 65 protection rating, will operate in an outdoor yard at the facility.
Given the bulk loading of bottles into the feed hopper and the shape of the bottles that could “float” on the blades, positioning themselves in line with the grinding chamber, the plastic bottle shredder hopper has been equipped with a pneumatic arc ram.
The ram can be manually operated to press the material onto the blades and ensure they are more easily captured by the blade hooks.
The shredding process is managed by a Siemens PLC and the supply meets the main requirements of Industry 4.0.
