Packaging Cardboard Recovery in Belgium

Statistics for 2014 compiled by CEPI (the European association of cartonboard manufacturers) indicate that nearly 7 million tons of cartonboard were consumed in Europe (www.cepicartonboard.com/?section=some_market_statistics). This material, used primarily in the packaging sector, can be reused multiple times (generally up to 6) and 54% of production uses recycled material (www.cepicartonboard.com/?section=cartonboard_production).

Last August, a K 13/50 hydraulic twin-shaft shredder equipped with a special hopper and hydraulic ram was delivered to Belgium, where it will be used as the primary element of a cardboard packaging shredding and compaction line designed to process 1.5 t/h.

The K 50 HP series hydraulic shredders, used for volume reduction of materials, can process up to 3 t/h of industrial waste and products, such as packaging cardboard, plastic and metal drums, cubitainers, plastics, electronic waste, pallets and food waste, as well as MSW, ELT and RDF.

Equipped with a 1,250 mm long shredding chamber and a 50 mm blade set with 1 hook, the K 13/50 shredder was then completed with special additional elements designed by SatrindTech’s Technical Department according to the customer’s specific requirements: a hopper capable of holding up to 5 m3 of material and an arc-type hydraulic ram, whose function is to facilitate the gripping action of the blades on the material during processing.
The hopper is equipped with an opening on the rear side fitted with a tilting door to allow the ram to enter the hopper when required by the operator.

The project, in which the SatrindTech shredder is the first element of the line, requires the material to be loaded into the hopper using a forklift.
Once processed, the shredded material falls onto a discharge conveyor that distributes it to the two compaction lines positioned parallel along the processing line.
The shredder, ram, discharge and transport conveyors are managed by a single electrical panel, which also includes a digital control panel for the hydraulic powerbank.

Since potentially flammable material must be processed, in addition to the requirements of CE standards, the shredder was supplied with a wiring system in compliance with Belgian legislation, specifically in accordance with standard NBN C30-004 F2.
