Extraordinary Maintenance of Industrial Shredders

The daily work of an industrial shredder is often very demanding, especially when it must grind particularly challenging materials such as tires, plastic films and agricultural sheets, electrical cables and metals.

Heavy working conditions, even on multiple shifts, can cause wear phenomena on blades, blade-carrying shafts, bearings and seals, selection grids, for which ordinary maintenance is no longer sufficient to guarantee optimal operating performance in terms of efficiency and effectiveness, and performance can decrease significantly.

In this case, extraordinary maintenance of the industrial shredder may be necessary to restore it to its original factory conditions.

The intervention scheduled with the customer normally includes the collection of the machinery for ground disassembly at SatrindTech’s service department.

Complete disassembly, as it proceeds, allows our technicians to analyze all parts, in order to evaluate which are the most worn and to propose to the customer a suitable extraordinary maintenance solution for the industrial shredder.

In most cases this concerns:

• Blade resharpening
• The condition of the hexagonal blade-carrying shafts (blade imprinting)
• Replacement of all gaskets (O-rings, oil seals) and mechanical seals
• Replacement of gaskets (packings) of intermediate bulkheads protecting the bearings
• Restoration through bushing of worn seats where seals operate

The intervention also includes verification of the motorization condition both for electric motors and for pumps and hydraulic motors, for which in some cases overhaul by the manufacturer may be necessary.

At the end of the extraordinary maintenance of the industrial shredder, retesting follows according to SatrindTech’s control specifications and only after product release to the customer.

The video below shows the case of an extraordinary maintenance intervention on a 3-shaft industrial shredder from the 3K 60 HP series equipped with 30 mm 4-tip blades and selection grids with 50 mm holes.

We completely disassembled and overhauled the shredder, resharpened all blades and replaced gaskets and mechanical seals. The blade-carrying shafts were in good condition, as were the gear wheels of the main gearbox. The material selection grids also did not show any particular wear.

All activities take place within SatrindTech’s technical service department, including blade grinding to the most suitable thickness values and tolerances.
