Hazardous waste shredding

A major company based in Emilia specializing in the recovery and disposal of special hazardous industrial waste asked us for a hazardous waste shredding solution for volume reduction, under the Industry 4.0 regime.

Given the type of application, a 150 HP 2-shaft shredder from the 2R series with hydraulic motorization, equipped with 75 mm 4-hook blades, was offered and is currently being installed and tested.

The shredding body has a shredding chamber 1,500 mm long by 1,100 mm wide, suitable for the irregularity and heterogeneity of the waste loaded into the hopper.

But what exactly is hazardous waste? The list is diverse and includes:

• waste from industrial chemical processes;
• waste from the metallurgical industry;
• waste from electrical and electronic equipment;
• solvents;
• waste oils;
• batteries and accumulators;
• waste from medical and veterinary activities;
• waste from leather and textile production;
• waste from the cosmetic industry;
• waste paints and varnishes; ink waste;
• agrochemical waste containing hazardous substances.

The list of waste is established in accordance with Article 1(a) of Directive 75/442/EEC on waste and Article 1(4) of Directive 91/689/EEC on hazardous waste.

The supply was not limited to the shredder but included several accessories that complete and further qualify it:

• a loading hopper with a 4 kW hydraulic pusher;
• a support frame with handrails and access ladder;
• a discharge conveyor belt;
• electrical cabinet with control panel.

The pusher

The hydraulic pusher is an indispensable accessory in certain applications, typical of industrial waste, and is fundamental for pressing material onto the blades inside the loading hopper, preventing both potential bridging effects and floating, so as not to reduce the shredder’s performance.

Support frame

In addition to forming the support base for the shredder, after careful evaluation of the static loads involved (the shredding body alone weighs 10 t), the support frame is equipped with a walkway, handrails, and a vertical ladder, allowing easy access to the shredder for routine inspections and maintenance.

Bidirectional discharge belt

The supply includes a metal slat conveyor belt 7 m long. Its unique feature is the ability to determine the discharge direction: a selector on the control panel allows the customer to decide whether to discharge to the right or to the left.

Electrical cabinet

A single electrical cabinet controls and manages the entire shredding cycle. The supply meets several requirements of the Industry 4.0 paradigm: PLC, HMI display, remote assistance, and remote diagnostics.

Interconnection and integration will be the customer’s responsibility in this case, although SatrindTech is able, through its partnerships, to offer complete solutions that meet all Industry 4.0 requirements, also assisting the customer with the necessary bureaucratic procedures.
