Industrial Shredder for Food Waste Onboard Ships

Volume reduction is essential for the proper disposal of many materials. In the case of food waste, the logistical challenge does not lie in brute force, but rather in a fast, complete, and easy-to-maintain solution.

Regulating the latter, the regulatory framework is provided by the MARPOL convention, an international agreement that regulates aspects such as ship exhaust gases, the use of hydrocarbons, and the management of marine waste. Industrial shredders can be installed to comply with the directives and limit waste discharge from ships and vessels. In particular, today we discuss a shredding solution designed specifically for this context.

Italy is a leading country in shipbuilding, given the presence of the most important shipowners globally on its territory. Leadership in this sector also involves waste management onboard. For this reason, the reduction and recycling of solid waste onboard ships through reuse, or complete disposal in accordance with legal requirements, must be considered a priority. SatrindTech has in its catalog a line designed specifically to be installed onboard ships in order to comply with current regulatory requirements.

Regarding food waste, MARPOL 73/78 Annex V directive allows for discharge at sea of waste with dimensions ≤25 mm outside special areas and at a distance between the vessel or offshore platform and the coast of ≥3 and ≤12 nautical miles.

SatrindTech offers a line of compact industrial shredders that comply with these requirements and are equipped with MARPOL certification. Two models are available, with power ratings of 4 HP and 10 HP, designed to perform optimally in this specific context.

A major Italian shipping group commissioned us with a request for food waste shredding onboard ships, in compliance with MARPOL directive requirements. SatrindTech supplied an F 410/360/N shredder with 7.5 kW (10 HP) equipped with 14-tooth blades, 10 mm thick.

Since space must be used wisely inside any type of vessel, the installation required considerable expertise in adapting the system to its location, so that it can function optimally while ensuring easy cleaning and maintenance.

Regarding the installation, the shredder is equipped with a closed hopper, with a manually operated push ram, and rests on a support frame at working height. To ensure safety during operations, the hopper is equipped with an inspection door with microswitch.

The shredder is also equipped with a discharge hopper connected to the vessel’s existing systems, to allow evacuation of treated food waste. In particular, the hopper is equipped with a special valve for high-pressure water injection for washing.
