Alkaline batteries are among the most common power sources for everyday electronic devices, such as remote controls, toys, and flashlights. However, once depleted, they become hazardous waste if improperly disposed of. Shredding alkaline batteries is a fundamental step in the recycling process, as it represents one of the first stages for material separation and resource recovery. Shredding not only breaks down the components but also facilitates the extraction of valuable materials, reducing environmental risks.

Composition of alkaline batteries

Alkaline batteries contain several recoverable materials, including zinc, manganese, steel, and graphite. Proper management of these materials requires an efficient shredding process to separate them safely and cost-effectively. Shredding has a dual purpose: reducing the size of batteries to facilitate subsequent mechanical treatment and isolating the various chemical components, many of which can be harmful if released into the environment.

The shredding process

Shredding alkaline batteries takes place in specialized facilities with machinery designed to break them into small pieces, separating the metallic parts from the chemical components. Typically, this process occurs in controlled environments to prevent the release of toxic dust and gases. Battery shredders are often equipped with filters and extraction systems to ensure that hazardous byproducts are captured and managed safely.

Once the batteries are shredded, the materials are separated for further treatment. Zinc and manganese, for instance, are collected for purification, while steel can be directly reused or sent to foundries for new products.

Challenges in shredding alkaline batteries

Shredding alkaline batteries presents various technical and operational challenges. First, the batteries are sealed in metallic casings that must be broken down without releasing the chemicals inside. Another obstacle is the variability in battery composition. Depending on the manufacturer and model, batteries may contain different quantities of materials, complicating the automated separation process.

SatrindTech has successfully addressed these challenges by providing a 22 kW single-shaft shredder with a material selection grid featuring 10 mm holes. The shredder was customized for a client by increasing the rotor width from 600 mm to 800 mm to boost hourly production.

Single-shaft shredders can be equipped with different plate sizes, defined according to the application, offering flexibility for processing various materials. Interchangeable grids with pre-selectable holes allow the appropriate final material size to be achieved.

The shredding line includes a loading conveyor and a discharge conveyor to transport the material to the next treatment and separation phase. For complete safety, the machine includes a dust and gas (VOC) extraction system to handle potentially hazardous emissions from the chemical components inside the batteries.

Benefits of shredding alkaline batteries

Despite operational challenges, shredding alkaline batteries offers numerous benefits. First, it reduces the overall waste volume, making transport and storage easier. Additionally, it allows for the recovery of significant percentages of valuable materials that can be reintegrated into the production cycle, reducing the need for virgin raw materials.

From an environmental perspective, shredding helps limit the release of hazardous chemicals into the environment. This process is critical to preventing soil and groundwater contamination, reducing the risk of negative impacts on human health and ecosystems.

Technological innovations

Technological innovation is playing a crucial role in improving the efficiency of shredding alkaline batteries. Recent developments include the use of robotics and advanced sensors to optimize the material separation process. Additionally, new low-temperature shredding systems are being tested, reducing the risk of gas emissions and enhancing overall safety.

Automation is also contributing to more efficient shredding. Highly automated plants are capable of processing larger volumes of batteries, lowering operational costs and increasing material recovery rates. These advancements offer new opportunities for the industry, making the treatment of alkaline batteries more sustainable and profitable.

Conclusion

For industry professionals, shredding alkaline batteries is a critical step in electronic waste management and the creation of a circular economy. While there are technical challenges, innovations in shredding are paving the way for more efficient and sustainable solutions.

The implementation of modern shredding plants, combined with policies promoting extended producer responsibility and differentiated collection, could significantly reduce the environmental impact of spent batteries, facilitating the recovery of valuable materials and contributing to a greener economy. Investing in advanced shredding technologies is a winning strategy for the industrial sector, turning an environmental problem into an opportunity for economic growth and sustainability.

We are pleased to announce that SatrindTech will be participating in Ecomondo 2024 in Rimini, from November 5th to 8th, Hall A1, Booth 407-306, where we will present our new shredder model, equipped with an innovative damping system for overload protection. This advanced mechanical device ensures the safety and reliability of your plant, designed to protect the transmission system from sudden overloads during operation.

Innovative overload protection system

The damping system effectively isolates the electric transmission components, consisting of the motor and planetary gear reducer, from the shredder’s main drive (gearbox and shafts). In the event of a blockage during the shredding phase, the dry friction discs slip, and a sensor connected to the PLC detects that the shredder’s shafts have stopped while the motor shaft is still rotating. This triggers the motor to stop within fractions of a second, protecting the drive mechanism. The system also signals any anomalies, which must be resolved before restarting the machine.

Maintenance-friendly design

The damping system is made up of two sections connected by friction discs, which transmit torque through adjustable springs. This allows the maximum transmittable torque to be set and adapted to specific operational needs. Over time, the natural wear of the discs can reduce the preload on the springs, but our technicians are ready to intervene during maintenance to adjust the compression and restore optimal performance.

The damping system is pre-adjusted by SatrindTech according to the shredder’s characteristics, ensuring optimal performance right from the first use.

We look forward to meeting you at Ecomondo 2024 to showcase all the technological innovations Satrindtech has to offer!

Context

Waste onboard ships is a crucial aspect of maritime safety and environmental protection. Within the framework of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL 73/78), Annex V focuses specifically on preventing pollution caused by garbage generated onboard. This annex establishes standards and guidelines for handling solid waste and specifies the types of waste that can be discharged at sea and those that must be retained onboard for proper disposal on land.

Below are some key considerations for handling waste onboard ships according to the MARPOL 73/78 Annex V Directive:

Classification of waste: Annex V categorizes waste into several types, including plastics, food waste, paper, metal, glass, and special waste such as ash and cargo residues. Each type of waste onboard ships has specific handling and disposal requirements that must be clearly understood by the crew.

Mandatory waste record keeping: ships with a gross tonnage exceeding 400 tons are required to maintain a waste record book that documents the quantity and type of waste generated, retained, and disposed of. The record book must be updated regularly and kept onboard for a minimum of two years.

Onboard waste systems: it is essential for ships to have an approved plan for managing waste onboard that includes detailed procedures for the collection, separation, treatment, storage, and disposal of waste. Furthermore, adequate containers and equipment must be available to manage waste in compliance with international standards.

Crew training: crew training is a key element in handling waste onboard ships. Crew members must be trained on MARPOL protocols and specific procedures for dealing with waste onboard, including the use of waste treatment equipment.

Innovation and technology: the adoption of innovative technologies can help improve how waste onboard ships is handled. Advanced waste treatment systems, such as onboard incinerators and shredding and compacting machines, can reduce the volume of waste and minimize environmental impact.

Inspections and compliance: port authorities and international organizations conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance with the provisions of MARPOL 73/78 Annex V. Non-compliance can lead to severe penalties, operational delays, and reputational damage.

International Collaboration and Capacity Building: given the global nature of maritime transport, collaboration among member states, international organizations, and industry operators is essential to build capacity and share best practices in handling waste onboard ships.

The smallest two-shaft shredder available in the SatrindTech catalogue

Ideal as a waste shredding solution for ships, the S3 series shredders, equipped with a 3kW electric motor, can be utilized in the maritime sector since the S3/3 model has obtained the MARPOL compliance certification. These shredders are equipped with a material selection grid with hole diameters designed to comply with the requirements of the MARPOL Directive, according to which the discharge of waste into the sea is prohibited, except as regulated within and outside special areas, particularly in accordance with the size of ground food waste.

Conclusions

Dealing with waste onboard ships, according to MARPOL Annex V, requires an integrated approach that combines regulatory compliance, continuous training, the adoption of advanced technologies, and strong international collaboration.

Pultruded composite profiles, made from glass fiber reinforced plastic (FRP), have gained increasing popularity across various professional sectors due to their numerous advantages over traditional materials. These benefits include high mechanical strength, reduced weight, corrosion resistance, and more. Here are the detailed advantages:

High mechanical strength: FRP offers superior mechanical strength, both in tension and compression, making it ideal for applications requiring robust and durable materials.

Reduced weight: a significant advantage of FRP is its highly favorable strength-to-weight ratio, particularly appreciated in sectors such as aerospace and automotive.

Thermal and electrical insulation: FRP has excellent insulating properties, both thermally and electrically, making it suitable for applications requiring prevention of heat or electricity conduction.

Reduced maintenance: thanks to its corrosion resistance and durability, pultruded profiles require less maintenance compared to traditional materials, reducing operational costs.

Weather resistance: pultruded FRP profiles withstand harsh weather conditions, including UV rays, rain, and wind, making them ideal for outdoor use.

Competitive costs: although the initial cost of FRP may be higher than some traditional materials, its long-term benefits, such as durability and reduced maintenance, can lead to lower overall lifecycle costs.

Sustainability: glass fiber reinforced plastic can be designed to have a reduced environmental impact due to its long lifespan and recyclability.

In conclusion, pultruded composite profiles made from glass fiber reinforced plastic offer a unique combination of strength, lightness, durability, and versatility, making them an ideal solution for many engineering and structural applications. Their use can lead to significant improvements in performance, efficiency, and sustainability.

Production methods of pultruded composite profiles

The production of pultruded composite profiles involves a process called pultrusion, a combination of the words “pull” and “extrusion.” This continuous and automated method allows for the creation of profiles with constant cross-sections and variable lengths. Here is a brief overview of the process:

Fiber preparation: glass fibers (or other reinforcing fibers like carbon or aramid) are unwound from reels and arranged in a specific format.

Impregnation: the fibers are impregnated with a liquid polymer resin, such as polyester, vinyl ester, or epoxy, typically in an impregnation bath.

Shaping: the resin-impregnated fibers are guided through a series of guides that arrange them into the desired shape and then pass through a heated forming die that gives them the final shape.

Polymerization: the impregnated material passes through a heated die where the resin fully polymerizes, solidifying and fixing the fibers in the desired shape.

Cooling, cutting, and finishing: after polymerization, the profile is cooled to further consolidate its shape. The cut profiles can undergo additional finishing treatments.

In summary, pultrusion is a highly efficient and versatile process for producing glass fiber reinforced composite profiles, ensuring products with high mechanical performance and long lifespan.

Recycling and shredding of pultruded composite profiles production waste

Glass fiber reinforced plastic is well-suited for recycling, allowing production waste to be reintroduced into the production cycle with clear economic and environmental benefits. An example is one of our leading clients in pultruded composite profiles production, where we installed a 22kW single-shaft shredder with a chair discharge belt, which discharges into a big-bag.

Both the hopper and the belt are fully enclosed and equipped with suction to prevent fiber dispersion in the work environment and ensure operator safety. Given the high abrasion caused by the glass fibers in the profiles, the shredder rotor is treated with a special anti-wear coating to extend its life and reduce maintenance intervals.

Another safety feature includes sensors that detect the presence of the collection bin: if the bin is not in place, the shredder and belt do not start, preventing material from falling to the ground without being collected.

All SatrindTech products are marketed considering the safety aspects of the machinery and operators, in compliance with mandatory requirements, even for environments with potentially explosive atmospheres (Atex).

Trend analysis

Analyzing data published in the Municipal Waste Report 2023 by ISPRA, articles from the National Association of Waste Treatment, Recovery and Disposal Companies, and statistics from the European Parliament on municipal waste management in Europe, a detailed overview is revealed:

Italy

Municipal waste production: Preliminary data from the 2023 Municipal Waste Report indicate a slight decrease in per capita urban waste production in 2023, with an estimated 498 kg compared to 502 kg in 2021. The total urban waste production is estimated at 35 million tons.

Municipal waste management: Separate waste collection reached 50.2% in 2023, with a slight increase from 48% in 2021. The percentage of urban waste ending up in landfills has decreased to 17.5%, confirming a downward trend over recent years.

Europe

Municipal waste production: 2023 Eurostat data are not yet available. However, preliminary estimates indicate an increase in per capita urban waste production in the EU, with an estimated 478 kg. The total urban waste production is estimated at 492 million tons.

Municipal waste management: Separate waste collection in the EU reached 51% in 2023, up from 49.6% in 2021. The percentage of urban waste in landfills has dropped to 17%, confirming a downward trend at the European level.

Main differences between Italy and Europe

The main difference between Italy and Europe lies in the percentage of urban waste that is recycled or composted. In Italy, this percentage has remained at 48% since 2019, while in the EU it has increased and reached 49.6% in 2021.

Another difference concerns the percentage of urban waste in landfills. In Italy, this percentage is still relatively high at 19% in 2021. In the EU, however, the percentage of urban waste in landfills is decreasing and reached 18.5% in 2021.

Future trends: commitment to sustainability

The European Union is committed to reducing municipal waste production and improving its management. By 2030, the goal is to reduce per capita urban waste production by 50% compared to 2008 levels and to increase the percentage of recycled or composted urban waste to 65%.

To achieve these goals, the EU is promoting policies aimed at reducing resource consumption, promoting material circularity, and improving separate waste collection. Municipal solid waste shredding contributes to these objectives.

The difference between municipal waste and municipal solid waste

The difference between municipal waste and municipal solid waste (abbreviated as MSW) is subtle but significant. Municipal waste includes all waste produced by human activities in municipal areas, including homes, businesses, and industries. Municipal solid waste, on the other hand, is a subcategory of municipal waste that includes non-hazardous, solid, and biodegradable waste.

Municipal waste can be divided into several categories, including:

Household waste: waste produced by homes, such as paper, plastic, glass, metal, organic waste, etc.

Commercial waste: waste produced by commercial activities, such as paper, plastic, glass, metal, organic waste, etc.

Industrial waste: waste produced by industries, such as hazardous waste, non-hazardous waste, solid waste, liquid waste, etc.

Municipal solid waste, on the other hand, can be divided into several categories, including:

Organic waste: biodegradable waste, such as food, plant scraps, etc.

Non-recyclable waste: waste that cannot be recycled or composted, such as diapers, medical waste, etc.

Recyclable waste: waste that can be transformed into new products, such as paper, plastic, glass, metal, etc.

The distinction between municipal waste and municipal solid waste is important because it has implications for their management. Municipal solid waste is generally easier to manage compared to other types of municipal waste because it is less hazardous and easier to recover.

Municipal solid waste shredding solution

Based on the statistics and trends emerging from the Municipal Waste Report 2023, articles from the National Association of Waste Treatment, Recovery, and Disposal Companies, and information provided by the European Parliament, it is clear that Europe and Italy are making significant strides in municipal waste management. With the European goal of reducing waste production and significantly increasing the percentage of recycled or composted waste by 2030, it is essential to explore and implement innovative and sustainable solutions that can accelerate the achievement of these goals.

In this context, introducing a solution for the shredding of municipal solid waste presents itself as a promising strategy aligned with the aforementioned objectives. Shredding Municipal solid waste can significantly improve the efficiency of separate waste collection, recycling, and composting, while reducing the amount of waste destined for landfills. This technology allows for the reduction of waste volume, facilitating transport and subsequent management, and can increase the recovery rate of valuable materials contained in the waste.

Innovative solutions by SatrindTech

SatrindTech designs and manufactures municipal solid waste shredding lines, installed in Italy, Europe, and the rest of the world. For example, the line shown in the accompanying image, installed in central-eastern Wales in the county of Powys, is based on a 110kW hydraulic dual-shaft shredder from the 2R150/T series, a discharge conveyor with a rubber belt, and a magnetic separator for de-ironing.

By introducing a solution for the shredding of municipal solid waste, cities and regions can take a significant step towards achieving environmental sustainability goals, contributing to the creation of a cleaner and greener future for future generations. This approach not only helps reduce the environmental footprint of waste management but also promotes the circular economy, transforming waste from a problem into a resource.

Assocarta, a member of the Federation of Paper and Graphics, has estimated the production of paper and cardboard in Italy for 2023 to account for 1.9% of the global production:

Global production of paper and cardboard for 2022

Furthermore, Assocarta has estimated that in 2023, a significant 60% of the raw materials for the paper industry consisted of recyclable paper:

Paper sector and bio circularity for 2022

Paper and cardboard are undoubtedly materials well-suited for recycling as a secondary raw material. As the data suggests, paper is the primary raw material in the sector. Italy ranks as the fourth-largest producer of paper and cardboard in Europe. The Italian paper industry is an important and growing sector.

The increase in recycling and the use of sustainable raw materials are factors that will contribute to making this sector even more competitive and sustainable in the future.

The recycling process of paper and cardboard involves several stages, from collection, storage, and selection to shredding. The latter stage of the process, better defined as shredding, is where industrial shredders come into play.

A concrete solution for paper and cardboard shredding

In the industrial production of paper and cardboard, offcuts and waste are generated that, instead of being treated as waste, can be recycled by the paper industry through the shredding of cardboard waste and paper waste, to be then reused as raw material.

Before being reused, the shredded material undergoes a bleaching process and is reduced to a pulper with hot water. It is then refined to separate the cellulose pulp to obtain the pulper, and finally, virgin cellulose is added, turning the waste back into raw material.

A practical case

For not excessively high volumes, a solution for shredding of cardboard waste and paper waste can come from using a 10 HP two-shaft shredder with electric drive, which integrates a discharge conveyor directly. A loading hopper allows for the manual loading of cardboard scraps.

The shredder is placed on a support frame resting on swiveling wheels, making it possible to move the unit within departments, placing it where needed.

A single electrical panel manages both the shredder and the conveyor in automatic mode, coordinating the start of the shredding phase with the operation of the conveyor.

As can be seen, the unit is very compact and takes up little space, ideal for production lines where the production of cardboard waste remains within certain limits.

Our sales team is at your disposal to provide further information and introduce you to the wide range of industrial shredders we offer and to support you in any shredding issues you may face.
