According to the ISPRA Urban Waste Report 2022 Edition<\/a>, in 2021 there were 1,970 multifunctional waste collection platforms in Italy. These platforms are facilities equipped for the separate collection of municipal and special waste, as well as for material recovery and recycling.<\/p>\n

In terms of geographical distribution, multifunctional platforms are present in all Italian regions, with a higher concentration in the Northern and Central regions. The regions with the highest number of multifunctional platforms are Lombardy (315), Veneto (280), and Tuscany (250).<\/p>\n<\/div>

Types and Volume of Waste Managed<\/h3><\/div>

In terms of type, multifunctional platforms can be classified based on the type of waste they collect. The most common are multifunctional platforms for municipal waste collection, which represent 90% of the total. Other types of multifunctional platforms include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • platforms for special waste collection;<\/li>\n
  • platforms for material recovery and recycling;<\/li>\n
  • platforms for hazardous waste management.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    In terms of waste volume managed, multifunctional platforms collected approximately 12.5 million tons of waste in 2021. Of these, 11.2 million tons were municipal waste, while 1.3 million tons were special waste.<\/p>\n

    Multifunctional platforms play an important role in waste management in Italy. They enable improved separate collection, material recovery and recycling, as well as reduced landfill disposal.<\/p>\n

      Innovation and Sustainability: The Case of a Lombard Platform<\/h3><\/div>

      One of these Lombard multifunctional platforms has recently expanded its non-hazardous industrial waste treatment capacity.<\/p>\n

      The company has installed two treatment lines, each consisting of a 220 HP twin-shaft shredder with hydraulic drive. The shredded material is collected in an underlying container, which rests on a platform equipped with load cells.<\/p>\n

      The load cells weigh the material and send the data to the customer’s data collection system. This system, which falls within the scope of Industry 4.0, enables real-time monitoring of the waste treatment process.<\/p>\n

      It is noteworthy that both the discharge container and the scale rest on a hydraulic extraction system that automatically ejects both in case of fire in the shredded material,<\/p>\n

      The new treatment lines enable the processing of a wide range of non-hazardous industrial waste and contribute to improving the customer’s environmental sustainability, allowing the company to reduce the volume of waste for landfill disposal.<\/p>\n

      Furthermore, the new treatment lines strengthen its position as a reliable reference point for medium and large national and international industries.<\/p>\n
